EMC World Day 2: Blogging through the Private Cloud

It was a bumpy flight coming into Boston over the water on Sunday afternoon, but I assure you, the ride at EMC World has been nonstop and fairly smooth since I arrived.  After a terrorizing shuttle experience from the airport to my hotel (see, I try to be a good corporate citizen and save money), I couldn’t wait to throw my bags in my hotel room and get started.  Well, truth be told, I was starving and desperately needed sustenance, but once satiated I skipped over to the convention center with my Dell folk and registered.  The place was absolutely buzzing with anticipation, and I’m sure the looming Counting Crows concert didn’t hurt.

Monday morning was a strong start.  Joe Tucci’s “Private Cloud” keynote got a huge turnout including the more than 1800 technical folks he has on staff at the event.  He called to our attention that EMC spends roughly 12% of their revenues on R&D or a total of $4.5 billion on innovative technologies.  No wonder there are almost 6,000 people in attendance this week.  That darn volcano kept another thousand away due to travel issues.  With a staggering 62% growth of new information entering our lives this year, Tucci proposes we’ll need to look forward to trust-worthy, reliable, controlled and secure cloud infrastructures to keep up.  He went on, illustrating that CIOs’ top priority remains server virtualization, and that x86 servers will be stronger than ever moving forward.  Man, we like that message!

Tucci was followed by Pat Gelsinger who officially introduced VPLEX, a technology who’s differentiating attribute is distributed cache (according to Gelsinger) where distance is no longer a barrier. Of course there were different opinions about it like this one, but overall it’s interesting.

We were also happy to hear from Mark Kilmartin, a current Dell customer also enjoying this fine event:

Got a great opportunity to see and meet some awesome EMC folks in the blogger’s lounge:  Chuck Hollis, Barry Burke, Mark Twomey and Stuart Miniman.  You were all a blast, and now I know why we’ve got a strong relationship.  It’s all about the good people involved.

If you’re at EMC World (or playing along at home), don’t forget about our upcoming sessions for the rest of the week:
