The cloud: is it your priority yet?

In recent years the significance and popularity of the cloud has increased exponentially and shows no signs of slowing down. Migrating or custom-building a cloud to suit specific requirements can offer businesses many benefits, so most organizations and CIOs are more than willing to invest aggressively in cloud-first strategies and architecture.

But are organizations using the cloud effectively?

CIOs and IT are aware that there is no one-size-fits-all. Implementation is the easy part; making the implemented cloud-based business model effective is the challenge. The strategy will vary, depending on specific requirements and the way companies want to operate in the future.

Cloud migration: things to consider

Implementing the Cloud; mitigating risk.

Despite the huge potential benefits garnered with effective cloud implementation, businesses and IT find can encounter testing issues if the full picture is not considered in advance.

Data Security

Lack of exact locational information on data storage or processes can increase data security risk. Add to that growing instances of data breaches, hacked interfaces and account hijacking make this a huge consideration when implementing the cloud.

Cost Management and Containment

Cloud computing saves businesses money as far as hardware goes, but bandwidth and software is where the larger investment comes in. The on-demand and scalable nature of cloud computing services makes defining and predicting quantities and costs a potential challenge.

Lack of Resources/Expertise

Another key challenge of effective cloud migration is the dissonance between rapidly advancing cloud technologies and the expertise/resources to navigate it. The expertise available needs to keep pace with evolving tech, in numbers and proficiency, hence selecting the right partner is crucial.

Governance/Control

IT’s lack of full control over infrastructure poses another challenge to the provision of governance, risks and data quality management required.

Compliance

Backup services or cloud storage are not regulated by industry best practices and compliance laws – an issue that crops up when moving from internal storage to a cloud.

Managing multiple clouds

The preference for a multi-cloud environment is only growing, but the challenges mentioned prove to be a formidable challenge when trying to foster such an environment.

Performance

Cloud migration depends majorly on service providers. The inherent lack of control could mean real-time monitoring issues, apart from linking the organization’s performance of BI and other cloud-based systems to the performance of the cloud provider.

Managing a private cloud

An inventory management system, while simultaneously orchestrating a hierarchy of execution to ensure that every automated tasks takes place at the right moment is a daunting mandate.

Segmented usage and adoption

Isolated cloud projects lacking shared standards, ad hoc security configurations and cross-team shared resources are potential pitfalls of not approaching cloud migration with a robust strategy in place.

The Cloud still comes out on top

Businesses of all sizes want to and will migrate; because the benefits are too good for the bottom line to ignore. The correct way to approach cloud migration and computing is to develop an optimized relationship between Business intelligence (BI) and the cloud.
What is critical is to partner with a cloud infrastructure provider who is dedicated to and resourceful at overcoming each of the challenges to help organizations to truly capitalize on the opportunities the cloud can have.
