EMC & OpenStack: Transforming Cloud and IT

The next wave of IT is upon us and it’s transforming everything in its path – how customers buy, build, consume, operate, and manage IT.  EMC has started down the path of Gartner’s projection that the “3rd Platform” will drive nearly all IT growth over the next 20 years. Everything is being done differently, including how EMC is addressing this tectonic shift.  A core component of this is EMC’s commitment and approach to Open Source and its focus on OpenStack.

EMC is participating in its fourth consecutive OpenStack Summit this week in Tokyo. EMC’s investments in acquiring Cloud leaders (Cloudscaling, Maginatics, and Spanning) combined with closely engaging key industry leaders, and continued community contributions have resulted in a rich set of OpenStack products, solutions, and services – all tailored to provide choice, simplicity, and flexibility at affordable costs.

EMC’s strategy has three components:

  1. Community contribution including code contributions, Cinder and Manila drivers across EMC’s products for current and future OpenStack releases, active community involvement (Foundation), and Open Source contributions (CoprHD, EMC Code).
  2. Integrated solutions, including enterprise-grade appliances and certified reference architectures with Canonical, Mirantis, and Red Hat complemented by a rich suite of professional services and joint support.
  3. Software-defined storage with leading cloud-scale object and HDFS platform (ECS) and leading software-defined block storage solution (ScaleIO), both freely available for consumers to use for testing and development purposes. For the first time, ScaleIO is now upstream with the Liberty release. In addition, EMC is working closely with partners Canonical and Mirantis to integrate ScaleIO into their platforms (via plug-ins) enabling customers to now choose the industry’s top performing software-defined storage for their Cloud deployments.

Through EMC’s mission of enabling businesses and service providers to transform their operations and deliver IT as a service, EMC is redefining cloud computing and at the forefront of this new wave of IT.
