Remember when data protection was simple? All computers, servers, and applications were securely tethered to the corporate network and the critical data they generated rested snugly within the safety of your datacenter. Make a backup copy to tape every night, store at a secure offsite location. Life was good.
Fast forward to 2015 and the landscape has completely changed. The major difference? Cloud has become ubiquitous. According to a recent Gartner Special Report, nearly half of all enterprises polled have deployed a private cloud, while the same number expect to have a hybrid cloud deployment by the end of 2017. Similarly, IDC research predicts the hybrid cloud market to grow at 23% in 2015.
So what does this mean? A whopping 76% of the 3,300 businesses surveyed as part of EMC’s Global Data Protection Index research said they have no disaster recovery plan for hybrid cloud applications. Sobering, considering how many business critical applications are being run in hybrid clouds today. Most businesses create, store, and protect data across a mix of on-premise, virtual environments, hybrid clouds, and applications born-in-the-cloud. How do they keep track of all this data? Manage it? Protect it?
At EMC, cloud is integral to everything we do. Whether customers are looking to protect data within a private cloud, migrate from one cloud to another, pull data from the public cloud into a private cloud – or anything in-between. We’re cloud enabling our entire portfolio and we’re continuing to invest in our cloud-as-a-service offerings for those customers looking to purchase data protection-as-a-service. Finally, we’re providing the framework and tools customers need to effectively protect, manage, search, restore, migrate, and analyze data spread across multiple clouds.
To this end, at EMC World this week we’re announcing three new paths to the cloud:
- CloudBoost enables customers to extend the value of their investment in all EMC data protection solutions by connecting protection workloads to EMC and third-party clouds. CloudBoost is now integrated with the Data Protection Suite, unlocking elastic, scale-out cloud storage as a seamless extension of EMC protection software. Based on our recent acquisition of Maginatics, CloudBoost facilitates secure, automatic, efficient data protection to both private and public clouds.
- With Spanning by EMC, EMC now offers a path for protecting data born-in-the-cloud via Microsoft Office 365. Adding to our existing lineup of backup solutions for Salesforce and Google Apps, Spanning Backup for Office 365 provides daily, automated backup and accurate restore, ensuring that your data is protected, available and recoverable. Finally, MozyEnterprise now offers a path for protecting virtual servers in the cloudas-a-service with support for the VMware vSphere platform. Via the VMware vSphere Web Client, users may now select, schedule, configure, and manage the MozyEnterprise backup service.
