Comparison of Dell and Cisco High Memory Capacity Blade Servers

As a member of Dell’s Solutions Performance Analysis team, I’ve gotten a lot of questions from people wanting to know how the power efficiency of our new PowerEdge 12th generation blades compares to our competitors.

To help answer some of these questions, I recently published a test report comparing the Power Efficiency of Dell and Cisco High Memory Capacity Blades

In the report, I compared a Cisco solution based on four UCS B250 M2 blades to a Dell solution based on four of the recently released PowerEdge M620 blades.  I also included a solution based on four of our previous generation M710HD blades for comparison.

Since high performance is important to customers in today’s virtualized world, each blade in each solution was configured with 192GB of memory, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, and the fastest 95 Watt processors it can support.  Hard drives, switches, and other components were configured similarly, and each solution had all power supplies populated for maximum availability.

I’m happy, but not surprised, to say that the Dell solutions trounce the competition in a comparison like this.  The performance / watt ratio of the PowerEdge M620-based solution was a full 104% higher than the Cisco solution; even our previous generation’s M710HD solution was 75% more power efficient.

I’ve got other exciting power efficiency news coming regarding M620, but in the meantime, download the Test Report and let me know what you think in the comments!
