Delivering cost savings and higher densities with innovation

Investing in innovation has enabled Dell’s Desktop Virtualization Solutions (DVS) to stay competitive and address an evolving set of user requirements. By focusing on performance and user density specs, our VDI and Cloud Client Computing solutions deliver an optimal experience at an attractive total cost of ownership (TCO).

When added to our flagship DVS Enterprise offering, Dell’s PowerEdge M620 blade solution delivers a savings on both a power consumption and cost-per-user basis compared to similar configurations on the market today. We recently commissioned a third-party test to measure single server performance of competitive blade servers and the results bolster our leadership position in the Cloud Client Computing space.

We put our PowerEdge M620 up against the Cisco UCS B200 M3, and the HP ProLiant BL460c G8. Principled Technologies, a Durham, NC-based technology assessment and testing company, found that our PowerEdge M620 blades not only delivered 19.4 percent lower cost per user but that the M620 blades were able to reduce power consumption by as much as 63.1 percent per user compared to competing options.

While live migration is a key feature and benefit of server virtualization, our M620 blades allow your IT department to move running workloads to available servers and potentially turn off idle servers to reduce power costs during slow usage cycles.[1]

Cost average active watts/user in dollars.

Our PowerEdge M620 uses fewer watts per user active than similar blades from HP and Cisco. Our solution uses 4.1 watts per user compared to HP’s 4.3 watts per user and Cisco’s 9.6 watts per user.

Cost average idle watts/user in dollars.

Our PowerEdge M620 consumed less idle watts per user than its competitors did – 5.2 percent less watts/user than the HP ProLiant BL460c G8, and 63.1 percent less watts/user than the Cisco UCS B200 M3 server.

The cost-savings on power can help lower the total cost of ownership, which is also good news for DVS Enterprise customers. Our M620 blade option generates lower energy bills each month – and by extension a lower carbon footprint – whether your deployment is running idle for extended intervals throughout the day or is deployed in a high-use, dynamic environment.

The Dell PowerEdge M620 solution also costs up to 19.4 percent less per user than the HP and Cisco solutions. Specifically, the cost per user of our DVS Enterprise solution was found to be $97.31 per user compared to $107.38 per user for a comparable HP solution and fully $120.78 per user for a comparable Cisco solution.

Cost per virtual desktop user, in USD, for the three blade servers.

Principled Technologies tested each blade server on an equal footing with its corresponding enclosure: The Dell PowerEdge M620 was installed in the Dell PowerEdge M1000e Blade Enclosure; the HP ProLiant BL460c G8 was installed in the HP BladeSystem C7000 Enclosure; and Cisco UCS B200 M3 was installed with two Cisco UCE 5108 Blade Server Chassis to achieve the same blade capacity as the competing solutions.

Most competitive desktop virtualization solutions today leverage the same CPU’s, a comparable number of DIMM slots, and the latest virtualization software. Indeed, Dell, HP, and Cisco all use the Intel Xeon E5-2680 with eight cores per processor, 16 RAM modules, and VMware ESXi 5.0.0 on the software side.

Yet while some vendors often make claims about higher user densities under very specific conditions, our DVS Enterprise solution incorporating M620 servers have been proven in testing to achieve lower dollar-per-user costs and lower watt-per-user costs. Our commitment to investing in innovation allows us to offer solutions that deliver predictable benefits both when the solution is idle or when running active workloads. That’s something anyone considering desktop virtualization can compare and count on, month after month.
