Extending the Backup and Recovery Ecosystem: EMC Offers New Integration with VMware vSphere Data Protection Advanced 5.5

Time sure flies when you’re not worrying about your backups. It was a little over a year ago when VMware announced their new vSphere Data Protection (VDP) backup software and virtual appliance powered by EMC Avamar. This collaboration between VMware and EMC has proved mutually beneficial for our customers and partners. Adoption has been growing steadily. Then earlier this year in February, VDP Advanced was launched featuring a larger capacity virtual appliance and two application-specific agents to target a larger segment of the market. Customer feedback has been excellent, and we’re ready for the next phase of expansion.

Today at VMworld 2013 Europe, VMware announced the release of vSphere Data Protection Advanced 5.5 with the latest data protection capabilities that provide increased scalability, reliability and disaster recovery. VDP Advanced now supports the ability to store backup data directly to an EMC Data Domain deduplication storage system. This provides VMware customers significantly more scalability and reliability as provided by the industry’s leading choice for protection storage: EMC Data Domain systems.

VDP Advanced 5.5 also provides new backup data replication to another VDP Advanced virtual appliance or to an EMC Avamar Data Store.  Customers will be able to implement their disaster recovery (DR) strategy in two ways, either to their own DR site or to a Cloud Service Provider that uses Avamar for Backup as a Service and Disaster Recovery as a Service.

But wait there’s more:  VSPEX Proven Infrastructures include VDP Advanced as an option, which is ideal for small VSPEX deployments as well as for Microsoft application-specific ones. VDP Advanced comes equipped with Microsoft specific agents for SQL, Exchange and SharePoint, which guarantees application consistent backup and recovery (see here for more information on VSPEX and VDP Advanced configurations available today). VSPEX enables partners to deliver a flexible solution that transforms IT with proven virtual infrastructure that includes optimized backup and recovery.

Learning more about the expanded ecosystem couldn’t be easier: Contact VMware or your VMware partners to learn more about VDP Advanced, and meet with EMC backup and recovery specialists and their partners to learn more about Avamar and Data Domain systems for optimal enterprise data protection.
