Formula One racing remains on the rise as a true global sporting phenomenon. Its appeal draws millions across the world who marvel at its speed, precision, efficiency and razor-thin tolerance for error. These characteristics define the sport itself; they also define the technology that stands behind it. Enter EMC and VCE.
Formula One racing is in the midst of the most transformative and disruptive series of rules changes in the sport’s history. These changes introduce radical disruption and equally radical opportunity. The winning teams will be those that adapt by transforming themselves and emerging as the most adept at generating competitive advantage through technology.
With that as context, the Lotus F1 Team turned to EMC to:
- Architect a private cloud-based platform with the ability to scale while also reducing the management and support burden
- Enable continued high performance, continuous operations and assured protection across regularly-changing workloads in two data centers
- Develop a track-side infrastructure as a platform for rapid analysis during testing and race weekends
EMC, VCE and the Lotus F1 Team’s IT management came together and today announced a partnership to meet these needs and transform the way in which the Lotus F1 Team will deliver and consume IT in the future.

The resulting solution includes:
- VCE Vblock Converged Infrastructure in the data centers as well as in the trucks for track-side processing where size and weight are a priority
- A consolidated management suite led by VMware’s vCloud Director for the necessary platform to improve management overhead
- EMC VNX with FAST Suite to cost-effectively support the necessary workload and peak coverage
- EMC Syncplicity for secure file sync, sharing and collaboration between the Lotus F1 Team and their Partners
- EMC Documentum Information Rights Management (IRM) to track and protect sensitive information, and prevent unauthorized access behind and beyond the firewall
- EMC Atmos for longer-term storage to allow the Lotus F1 Team designers and developers to continue to have access to more of their data for a longer period of time
- EMC VPLEX for continuous operations
- EMC Data Domain deduplication storage systems for “belt and braces” data protection for such a highly critical solution
- EMC Cloud Tiering Appliance for seamless migration of data between the storage platforms of Vblock and Atmos
All of this is being delivered with combined EMC and VCE Global Professional Services teams, which will be breaking speed records of their own to get this new platform up, running and instrumental in Lotus F1 Team’s development of the 2014 car.
